Completing homework should average about 45 minutes per day, covering five school days. This means a total of almost four hours a week. In a normal week, most fourth grade homework will be given out in a packet on Monday. The packet will be due on or before the following Monday. Shortened weeks will be adjusted accordingly. There will be ongoing projects and activities through the year that may require further work at home. Classroom assignments that are not finished during the class time given will be sent home to be completed by the next day, in addition to scheduled homework. Homework will not be given in advance of anticipated absences. Makeup work will be given when the child returns. Please remember that many school experiences cannot be given on paper. Your child will miss important learning activities when late or absent. |
There will be many opportunities for students to earn extra credit in any grading period. Extra credit will not be given at the end of the grading period so that students can raise their final grade. |

Knowing the meanings of prefixes, suffixes, and roots of words will give students a greater understanding of language. It also gives students the ability to approach new words with greater success. A list of five new word parts will be given out and discussed at the beginning of the week (Word Within the Word or WWW). Students are given the week to work with/study these parts and will be given a simple matching test on Mondays. The test will cover the current week's word parts as well as the ones from the previous week. |
At this level, students should be able to work independently. On Monday through Thursday, in a normal week, students will have some short language arts and social studies activities to work on at the beginning of the class. We will review the material together. On Friday there will be a quiz on the material covered. Only the quiz grade will be recorded. |
Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle with a spill proof lid. It will need to go home each day so it can be washed. We don't want the water bottles to become science experiments! |
Visitors will not be allowed in the classrooms unless they are here for a volunteer time that has been prearranged with the classroom teacher. There will be plenty of chances to help. Please do not show up in the room unannounced. |
